Respiratory Medicine Never Gets Boring
T.I.
(Initials notation)
Graduated in 2024
I graduated from Oita University and am currently in my third year as a physician.
I am currently working as an internist at Usuki Cosmos Hospital.
What inspired you to pursue respiratory medicine?
I first became interested in respiratory medicine during medical school after spending time in the department through a laboratory assignment. As I rotated through various specialties during my residency training, I realized that my interests were particularly suited to managing acute conditions and performing procedures. At one point, I even considered specializing in cardiology. However, while training in respiratory medicine, I became strongly aware of how broad and diverse the field is, which ultimately led me to choose respiratory medicine.
The breadth of respiratory medicine that appealed to me can be summarized in two major aspects. First, it covers everything from acute care to chronic disease management. Second, the field spans a wide variety of areas, including infectious diseases, malignancies, allergy and immunology, and diffuse lung diseases.
I felt that this diversity suited my personality well, as I tend to get bored easily, and that is why I decided to join the department of respiratory medicine.

What kind of physician would you like to become in the future?
The kind of physician I aspire to become is one who is highly skilled in airway and respiratory management, circulatory management, and what is often referred to as ABC management. Of course, I want to continue improving these clinical abilities, but because medicine is ultimately a profession centered on people, I also want to be a physician who communicates well with patients and colleagues.
I hope to never forget the importance of listening carefully to patients’ concerns and staying close to them with empathy.
A message to medical students and residents
As medical students and residents rotate through various specialties, I believe many different fields will spark your interest. There are many perspectives when it comes to choosing a specialty, and I do not think there is a single correct answer. What matters most is clarifying your own beliefs and understanding what you truly value.
The Department of Respiratory and Infectious Diseases is filled with wonderful physicians, including Professor Komiya, who genuinely respect and support each individual’s way of thinking. I believe it is a truly welcoming and supportive department for those considering joining. We would be very happy to work together with you!
