In search of the ideal doctor

S.I.

(Initials notation)

Graduated in 2023

I graduated from Oita University and am in my third year as a doctor.
I currently work as an internal medicine doctor at Usuki Cosmos Hospital. When I was a student, I was a member of the handball club.

What inspired you to pursue a career in respiratory medicine?

Having suffered from childhood asthma, I was originally interested in respiratory medicine. As a student, I had a clinical clerkship in respiratory and infectious diseases and had fond memories of it, so I vaguely considered it as a future career. However, as a resident, training in various departments leads to interest in various fields, and in my first year of training in gastroenterology, I discovered the joy of endoscopic examinations, which sparked my interest in gastroenterology.
During my second year as a resident, I was trained in the respiratory and infectious diseases department at a university, where I received kind guidance from the doctors and was able to perform endoscopic examinations. In addition, respiratory medicine deals with a wide range of diseases, including diffuse lung disease, lung cancer, allergies, and infectious diseases, and I felt that it would be fun to continue learning there even after joining the department. I decided to join the respiratory and infectious diseases department because I felt that it was the best fit for me, with the variety of procedures I could perform, my interest in diseases, and the atmosphere of the doctors.

What kind of doctor would you like to become in the future?

As I was treated for asthma in my childhood, my ideal was to have a local family doctor. However, after entering university and working as a medical intern, I saw many doctors active in various fields, and it became difficult to envision a clear ideal image of myself as a doctor. However, the Department of Respiratory Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Oita University provides various opportunities, so I am looking for a field that suits me.

A word for students and resident doctors:

I think there are many different types of people out there, including those who have already decided where to join, those who are having trouble deciding on a place to join, and those who are hesitant to join due to special circumstances. I myself had already decided on a place to join, but due to circumstances at the time of my university enrollment, I was worried about not knowing what the future held for my medical career after joining the hospital.
However, Professor Komiya and other senior doctors who had previously been in the same situation were kind enough to give me advice, and I was able to join the Department of Respiratory Medicine and Infectious Diseases with peace of mind. I think there are probably many people who are in the same situation as me. If you have any questions about joining the department, please feel free to come to the Department of Respiratory Medicine and Infectious Diseases. We look forward to seeing you.
