Thanks to the enthusiastic guidance, I received an award at the resident session.

Graduated in 2022

I graduated from Oita University and am currently in my third year as a doctor.
I am now working at Nagamoto Memorial Hospital, where I am balancing my duties between the respiratory medicine and emergency departments.

What inspired you to pursue a career in respiratory medicine?

Since my student days, I’ve been interested in outpatient care and diagnostic medicine, and by the time I started my initial clinical training, I had already decided to pursue a career in internal medicine. I planned to decide on my specialty during my rotations, and I had the opportunity to rotate through the respiratory medicine department at the university hospital during my second year of training, in April and May.
During the two-month rotation, I was drawn to the wide range of respiratory diseases, such as infections, malignancies, and diffuse lung diseases, all while working in a bright, academic environment within the department.
The turning point that led me to choose respiratory medicine as my specialty came midway through my second year of training, when I was given the opportunity to present at a regional conference. Under the enthusiastic guidance of my senior doctors, I received an award during the resident session, and the following year, I was able to present again at the Respiratory Society Annual Meeting. It was through these valuable opportunities and connections that I decided to join the respiratory medicine department.

What kind of doctor would you like to become in the future?

One of the attractions of respiratory medicine, I believe, is the ability to develop skills that cover various stages of a patient’s life—from acute respiratory management to chronic care with lifestyle guidance and medication adjustments, as well as palliative care. My goal is to acquire these skills so that I can be a doctor who accompanies patients over the long term, helping them achieve the best possible life according to their own values.
I entered Oita University through the regional admission program, and from the start, I have aimed to practice medicine rooted in the local community. My ultimate goal remains unchanged—to become the kind of doctor I once envisioned: “the doctor who helps when you’re in trouble.” I will continue to strive to be a doctor who considers not only the patient’s condition but also their thoughts and environment, and to improve through continued effort.

A word for students and resident doctors:

As I experienced myself, many students and residents may still be uncertain about their future, unsure of what kind of medicine they want to practice or what their path should be.
The charm of the Oita University Department of Respiratory Medicine is that it offers opportunities to engage with a wide range of diseases, from acute to chronic care, as well as palliative care, both benign and malignant conditions, and a combination of clinical practice and research. For those who are unsure about their specialty, looking for a new direction, or simply interested in respiratory medicine, I would be happy to welcome you for a visit. We look forward to seeing you!
