Cultivating interest in the world of respiratory medicine
M.Y.
(Initials notation)
Graduated in 2023
I graduated from Oita University and am in my third year as a doctor.
I am currently working as a resident in respiratory medicine at Iizuka Hospital.
What inspired you to pursue a career in respiratory medicine?
I didn’t aim to become a respiratory physician when I was a student, and I spent my first year as a resident at a city hospital that did not have a respiratory medicine department. As I rotated through various medical departments, I saw many patients with poor respiratory conditions, and vaguely wanted to become a doctor who could properly manage respiratory care.
During my second year of training in respiratory medicine at a university hospital, I was involved in various medical treatments, such as malignant tumors, interstitial lung disease, allergies, and infectious diseases, and I realized how diverse the field was. I was also attracted to the variety of procedures, such as bronchoscopy, thoracic drainage, and thoracentesis. I chose respiratory medicine because I thought that it would be easy to find a field that suits me and interests me, not just respiratory management, even after joining the hospital.

What kind of doctor would you like to become in the future?
First of all, I want to acquire knowledge and skills every day so that I can provide proper medical care in a wide range of respiratory medicine fields. I also want to become a doctor who can keep up to date with the latest topics so that I can propose treatment methods that are tailored to the background of each patient and have a variety of options for myself.
A word for students and resident doctors:
Respiratory medicine is a diverse field of medicine, so even if you don’t have a clear interest at the moment, I think it’s easy to find a field that suits you or interests you after you join. I can also recommend it to students and interns who have difficulty finding their goals or interests, like myself. Please come and visit us.
