A medical department where you can experience a wide variety of diseases

N.K.

(Initials notation)

Graduated in 2023

I joined the Department of Respiratory and Infectious Diseases at Oita University Hospital in 2025.
This is my third year as a doctor. This year I am working at Oita Red Cross Hospital.

What inspired you to pursue a career in respiratory medicine?

Since I was a student, I wanted to learn how to deal with various systemic diseases, but at the same time, I also wanted to have my own specialty. Through my initial training, I was attracted to the opportunity to treat a wide range of diseases, including infectious diseases, allergies, collagen diseases, and tumors, and so I decided to apply to respiratory medicine.
During my initial training, I visited several universities, but I was impressed by the many young doctors at the Department of Respiratory Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Oita University, and the lively atmosphere. I also felt that there was a lot of communication within the department, and that it was relatively easy to consult with senior doctors about daily cases, so I decided to join the department.

What kind of doctor would you like to become in the future?

Our goal is to always provide the best possible medical care to our patients.
Although there are still many areas in which we need to improve in terms of ward management, outpatient care, and initial response to emergency patients, we will continue to work hard.

A word for students and resident doctors:

I’m sure there are a certain number of students and interns who are struggling to decide which department they want to specialize in or where they want to work.
This was the case for me, but I think it’s only through observation and practical training that you can get an idea of the medical department.
If you have even the slightest interest in respiratory care, we would like you to come and observe/train at our department. We look forward to seeing you.
