I graduated from Oita University and am currently in my third year as a physician.
I am currently working at a hospital in Oita City.
What inspired you to pursue respiratory medicine?
The reason I chose respiratory medicine was because the kind of physician I aspired to become was an internist capable of treating the whole patient.
During my residency training, the physicians in the respiratory medicine department carefully addressed each and every concern raised by their patients. Patients’ symptoms are not limited to respiratory issues alone, but extend across many different areas, and seeing those physicians respond comprehensively to all of them made me want to become like them.
I was also attracted to the fact that respiratory medicine allows physicians to care for a wide range of conditions, from emergency and acute illnesses to palliative care. I felt that this specialty would enable me to provide medical care to patients in many different ways throughout the course of their illnesses.
What kind of physician would you like to become in the future?
In the future, I hope to become a physician equipped with the knowledge and technical skills necessary to truly stay close to each individual patient.
A message to medical students and residents
I struggled greatly with choosing a specialty during both medical school and residency. When you feel uncertain, I strongly recommend talking thoroughly with physicians in the departments you are considering. Not only the respiratory medicine physicians, but also doctors from many other departments were always willing to kindly offer advice.
Some of you may feel lost, unsure of the kind of physician you want to become or what you truly want to pursue. However, respiratory medicine offers a wide variety of procedures and diseases, and you may discover a field that genuinely interests you.
It is also a very kind and welcoming working environment.
